Pretrial Justice: Ensuring Fair Treatment for the Poor
In remarks delivered at the headquarters of the U.N. in New York, James A. Goldston, executive director of the Open Society Justice Initiative, outlined a range of steps needed to ensure fair treatment of the poor by national justice systems.
Goldston was addressing a panel discussion organized by the office of the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Magdalena Sepúlveda Carmona, entitled "Punishing the poor: Exploring measures in social policy that penalize, segregate, control or undermine the autonomy of people living in poverty".
