The UN-backed Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) will begin hearing opening statements in the trial of three of the four most senior surviving members of the Khmer Rouge in Phnom Penh on Monday, November 21.

This two-page fact sheet summarizes some of the issues surrounding the trial, as well as the ECCC's other ongoing cases.

A more comprehensive account of recent events can be found in the Open Society Justice Initiative's recent monitoring update, which includes an urgent call for the UN to establish an independent inquiry into allegations of judicial misconduct involving the office of the co-investigating judges.

The Justice Initiative has been monitoring events at the ECCC since before it began proceedings in 2007.
