Jonathan Birchall

Jonathan Birchall is senior officer for communications and publications, responsible for overseeing this area of work for the Open Society Justice Initiative.  Working within the Open Society Foundations office of communications, Birchall provides strategic communications direction to the Justice Initiative’s media outreach, Internet profile, multimedia features, and publications.

Birchall has worked for more than twenty years as a journalist with the BBC World Service and the Financial Times. He spent a great part of his career on international political reporting in the Middle East, East Asia, Europe, and at the United Nations.  He has experience in the full range of news media, from radio and television, to print and online coverage, including emerging social media.

His assignments have included reporting from Somaliland, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, Caucasus, France and Croatia, covering conflicts including the first Gulf War, the Russian invasion of Chechnya, secessionist rebellion in Djibouti, and the war in the Balkans.
