Capacity for Civil Society Communication

Guidelines

The Capacity for Civil Society Communications initiative supports the adoption of innovative communications tactics and tools. By introducing organizations to new ways of approaching information and communications projects, as well as to the tools available to put these new skills to use, the initiative aims to transform the way that civil society organizations, particularly those engaged in monitoring and advocacy, use and produce information.

Based on the Open Society Institute's broader interests, this initiative focuses on three main areas:

  • monitoring, data collection and analysis, and investigative work, sometimes in high-risk settings;
  • long-term advocacy and public outreach as well as short-term, intense campaigning;
  • routine collaboration and information-sharing with other organizations in local, regional and global networks.

The Capacity initiative seeks both to support innovation and experimentation in expert networks, and the application of communications skills and tools with organizations operating across a range of issue areas important to the Open Society Institute. Projects supported may include trainings and materials creation, implementation of tools within a given network or organization, or individual consultations on online strategies or information projects to key organizations.

For instructions on submitting an application for funding, please view the Information Program’s Guidelines and frequently asked questions.
