Institutional Support: Continuing Education and Advanced Studies Centers


The Continuing Education and Advanced Studies Centers focus on providing students and policymakers with post-undergraduate education opportunities.

Center for Political Studies, Donetsk State University
Donetsk, Ukraine (Est. 1992)

The Center for Political Studies (CPS) works to develop sociology and political science curricula and programs of study at Donetsk University. In addition, CPS cooperates with state and public organizations and the mass media on issues of social and economic policy. CPS also coordinates the political science faculty at Donetsk University, and draws its students from the university's undergraduate student body. The Center cooperates with political science research institutions in Ukraine and internationally. CPS has organized conferences jointly with various international organizations such as the Information and Press Division of NATO, and the UN Representation in Ukraine. HESP contributes to running costs.

Inter-University Center Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik, Croatia (Est. 1971)

The Inter-University Center Dubrovnik (IUC) is an independent, international institution for advanced studies which offers short post-graduate courses in the social sciences, humanities, and other fields. IUC strives to "build bridges" in a region and world that must continue to dedicate itself to pluralism. Its international agenda in various disciplines, notably in the social sciences and humanities, continues to be informed by issues of post-communism and European integration, and concentrates on current social, political, environmental and other issues. HESP supports course participants from former Yugoslav and Soviet Union republics in order to enhance the cooperation of academics and intellectuals of this particular region.

Moscow School of Political Studies
Moscow, Russia (Est. 1992)

The Moscow School of Political Studies is a private, independent school which aims to provide young politicians, business people and public administrators with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical training to take on the challenge of building a free and democratic Russia. The school organizes seminars and short courses, and repeatedly attracts an international body of experts to lead the seminars. The school's activity is supported by the European Commission, the Council of Europe, USIS, USAID, the Westminster Foundation and local founders. HESP contributes to running costs.

New Europe College
Bucharest, Romania (Est. 1994)

The New Europe College (NEC) is an independent Romanian institute of advanced study for the humanities and social sciences. The aim of the institution’s programs and activities is to contribute to the reforming of the Romanian as well as regional higher education through promoting new ideas and methods, providing a framework for research and international cooperation, facilitating networking of academics. HESP is providing support to the NEC-LINK program that aims to directly contribute to the advancement of higher education in four major Romanian academic centers (Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, and Timisoara). Each year eight pairs of outstanding academics work together at each other's host institutions to develop and teach joint courses, and carry out joint research. The teams also include PhD students.

Vilem Mathesius Center, Charles University
Prague, Czech Republic

The Vilem Mathesius Center (VMC) regularly hosts two-week seminars on semiotics and linguistics for international students and professors with the aim of reviving and awakening interest in the old Prague linguistics school. The center attracts an international group of leading specialists to teach each course. HESP provides funding for Central and East European students to participate in VMC seminars.
