Institutional Support

The International Higher Education Support Program (HESP) has developed a strategy that involves both financial assistance and proactive engagement with institutions in a number of priority areas, based on the understanding that long-term and comprehensive support and involvement are fundamental. HESP works with a network of institutions to create strategic plans for sustainable development, with particular emphasis in the areas of staff and faculty development, financial planning, diversification of funding, capital acquisition, and effective and transparent governance. HESP also works with institutions to raise the profile of liberal arts education in the region by encouraging free curricula, interdepartmental credit transfer, interdisciplinary studies, and student-oriented learning.

HESP continues to fund institutions through a real cost–based tuition formula that allows HESP to provide means-tested scholarships for national and international students. Through such proactive and defined formulas, HESP works with institutions to guarantee equal access to education for financially and geographically disadvantaged students. Finally, HESP works with institutions to address issues of structural change such that institutions are better positioned to serve as national and international resource centers and models for effective development.
