University Autonomy Workshop

Location: Budapest, Hungary
Event Date: April 21, 2005 - April 23, 2005

In response to requests received from Ukraine and Georgia, HESP and CEU Special and Extension Programs organized a University Autonomy Workshop in Budapest. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss historical, political, cultural, and legal aspects of university autonomy and practical steps to be taken to extend university autonomy in Ukraine and Georgia.

Participants included a number of university rectors and vice-rectors and Education Ministry officials from both countries. Speakers included Prof. Hans Weiler from Stanford University, Prof. David Phillips from Oxford, Prof. Steve Fuller from the University of Warwick, and others.

The workshop began with a public lecture, "Ambivalence: Contradictions in Contemporary Higher Education," given by Professor Weiler.
