Global Commission on HIV and the Law Begins Regional Discussion in Asia-Pacific Region
As part of the Global Commission on HIV and the Law, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) will host a two-day regional dialogue to bring together civil society, policy experts, and governmental officials to discuss the impact of law on the response to HIV in Asia and the Pacific. A key focus of the dialogue will be to hear evidence from sex workers and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals about how criminalization affects their ability to access sexual health services and protect themselves from HIV. At the same time, the convening will be used as an opportunity to further regional efforts to create legal environments that support effective responses to HIV.
The meeting, which takes place in Bangkok Thailand on February 16-17, is one of at least four regional dialogues scheduled for the first half of 2011 as part of the Global Commission. The Open Society Public Health Program is providing support to UNDP to host the Global Commission’s regional dialogues, as well as support for civil society groups to ensure their effective engagement in the process.
