Cambodia Sex Workers' Day of Awareness
June 4, 2008

For the past two months, law enforcement officials in Cambodia have cracked down on the sex industry, forcing nationwide brothel closures and raids in areas where sex workers and their clients are known to gather. Sex workers have reported widespread human rights abuses by police including extortion, rape, and the illegal confiscation of personal property and income. In response, sex workers, with the support of SHARP grantee the Asia-Pacific Network of Sex Workers, organized an open day of action on June 4th in the capital city Phnom Penh to protest widespread human rights abuses.

An article in the June 4, 2008, International Herald Tribune describes the peaceful protest as well as the conditions in Cambodia.
