Kazakh LGBT Activists New York Study Tour
2005

November 16–18, 2005, SHARP facilitated a study tour for a group of eight nascent LGBT activists from Kazakhstan who were grantees of Soros Foundation–Kazakhstan. Gay Men’s Health Crisis in New York agreed to host the group and organized an agenda around their expressed interests, including how LGBT organizations in the United States function; how to establish and run centers for psychological help; historical issues of the LGBT movement, including lessons learned and recommendations; approaches for dealing with stigma and discrimination for LGBT; how to work within communities to address LGBT needs and increase public tolerance; and identifying what organizations might serve as potential partners for future work.
