Empower Foundation
2006

A grant to support members of Thailand’s Empower Foundation to participate as attendees and panelists in the XVI International AIDS Conference in Toronto, Canada, and to present “Kumjing,” a powerful educational and awareness raising strategy to dispel the myths that migrants and sex workers are only "service targets" or "vectors of HIV." Kumjing are paper mache dolls representing the voices of undocumented migrants from the Shan State in Burma who illegally cross Thailand's borders in search of a better life. Empower brought 6 of these dolls to Toronto for "adoption." Kumjing have traveled around the globe to places where Shan migrants are not allowed and have been accorded the rights that many Shan people can only dream of, inspiring dialogue and raising awareness of migrant and sex worker rights each place they travel.
