International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission
2008

A grant to the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) to support their efforts to decriminalize consensual homosexual acts in East, West and Southern Africa.  Supported activities include: ensuring that sexual minority activists are present and equipped at the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights to lead advocacy efforts to advance their rights; developing shadow reports as a mechanism to document the human rights situation of sexual minorities for use in education and advocacy; establishing partnerships between mainstream human rights groups, lawyers and sexual minority activists to coordinate national and international responses to discriminatory laws, policies and practices; and educating African spiritual leaders in an effort to address religious-based homophobia.  This grant was funded in partnership with the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa and OSI's Africa Regional Program.
