OSI’s Sexual Health and Rights Project presented a discussion with Meena Seshu, founder and secretary general of Sampada Grameen Mahila Sanstha (SANGRAM), an HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and support organization working with socially marginalized populations in Maharashtra State, India. In addition to educating the general public about HIV/AIDS, SANGRAM targets sex workers and other vulnerable populations at risk of HIV/AIDS infection to improve their health, build their capacity to negotiate for safer sex, and support them in asserting and defending their rights. Seshu’s outstanding work with SANGRAM led Human Rights Watch to honor her in 2002 with the Human Rights Award, their highest recognition.
Seshu discussed SANGRAM's work as well as current challenges in providing sexual health and rights services to marginalized populations.
