The Open Society Institute's Sexual Health and Rights Project and Network Women's Program presented a discussion, "Is the African Commission an Effective Forum for Promoting the Rights of Same-Sex Practicing People?"

Starting with an overview of the human rights situation for same-sex practicing people in Africa, the presenters discussed the status of sexual rights in the African human rights system in relation to other regional and international human rights frameworks. The results of the recent all-Africa strategy meeting on advancing LGBT rights at the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights were presented. Panelists and the audience discussed ways to promote the set of strategies developed in Banjul for furthering LGBT rights in Africa at the regional and local levels.
