The Capital Area Vaccine Effort (CAVE) has produced a fact sheet addressing sex and gender data collection in HIV/AIDS research. Most researchers agree that "sex" refers to birth sex or biological sex and that "gender" refers to someone’s gender identity. There continues, however, to be significant discrepancies across networks in how data on sex and gender is collected. The fact sheet details definitions important to the transgender community and discusses the lack of HIV/AIDS research in the transgender community.

The Capital Area Vaccine Effort is a volunteer panel of individuals from the general public and from the diverse communities affected by AIDS. CAVE is organized to assist and advise AIDS vaccine trials in the metropolitan DC area. Although not currently an OSI grantee, CAVE shares SHARP's goals of improving the quality of information about HIV/AIDS and the transgender community.
