Addressing Direct and Indirect Discrimination in Roma Access to Health Care

Grantee List

Grantees
Romani CRISS - Roma Center for Social Intervention and Studies, Bucharest
2006

Funds are to promote equal access of Roma to health services by creating a cooperative link between relevant actors in health policy and Roma communities. The project will include training of health mediators and Roma leaders in theory and practice related to the right to health, and training of health personnel in human rights with specific focus on the right of Roma people to access appropriate and quality health services. Plans for combating discrimination in the health sector will be elaborated as an outcome of the training.

The grant will also support the improvement of the documentation system on access of Roma to health care by collecting data on the health status of Roma and health-related policies, projects and practices targeting the Roma population. The data will be disseminated to relevant authorities and will constitute the basis for recommendations and intervention strategies to address discrimination of Roma in access to health services. Cases of discrimination will be brought before the National Council for Combating Discrimination and the courts of law in order to promote sanctioning and reparation. A database and a discussion forum on Roma access to health care will be created on the website of the organization.
