Addressing Direct and Indirect Discrimination in Roma Access to Health Care

Grantee List

RHP takes a comprehensive approach to address discrimination against Roma in health care. The program focuses on three related areas: media, access to legal services, and strategic litigation. It works closely with Network Media Program, Public Health Media Project, and the Law and Health Initiative (LAHI) in moving these initiatives forward.

One of the main goals of RHP is to raise visibility around Roma access to health care. The program is currently funding investigative journalism projects on Roma access to health care in four target countries focusing on discrimination of Roma in the health care setting. In collaboration with the Network Media Program, RHP is supporting capacity building for Roma and non-Roma media to work on Roma Health issues.

Together with the Law and Health Initiative, RHP is supporting the use of legal mechanisms to address discrimination faced by Roma in health care settings. Activities include promoting collaboration between Health Mediators and human rights monitors to help the Roma community gain access to legal aid in cases of discrimination. RHP also supported the European Roma Rights Center to conduct a study of the intersection between public health and human rights. The study, Ambulance Not on the Way: The Disgrace of Healthcare for Roma in Europe, is available online.
