Global Fund for AIDS, TB and Malaria
The Global Fund for AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFATM) was established in 2001 in response to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan's "Call to Action." In April 2002 the Fund announced its first grants to national programs seeking to better prevent and treat these three diseases. To date GFATM has committed US$3 billion in 128 countries to support aggressive interventions against all three diseases.

Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)
Established in 1994, UNAIDS is an innovative joint venture of the United Nations family. It brings together the efforts and resources of ten UN system organizations (UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, ILO, UNESCO, WHO, and the World Bank) to advocate for global action on the HIV/AIDS epidemic. UNAIDS leads, strengthens, and supports an expanded response to prevent transmission of HIV, providing care and support, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV/AIDS, and alleviating the impact of the epidemic.

The "3 by 5" Initiative
"3 by 5" is a global target set by WHO and UNAIDS to treat 3 million people living with HIV/AIDS in low and middle income countries by the end of 2005. This ambitious goal was endorsed by 192 countries at the World Health Assembly in May 2004. To achieve this target, many players are working together, including national authorities, UN agencies, multilateral agencies, foundations, non-governmental, faith-based and community organizations, the private sector, labor unions, and people living with HIV/AIDS.
