Access to Education and Employment for People with Intellectual Disabilities: An Overview of the Situation in Central and Eastern Europe

October 2006

OSI

This paper provides a general overview of the situation of people with intellectual disabilities living in Central and Eastern Europe, with a particular focus on access to education and employment, and suggests steps to be taken to address barriers to their social inclusion. The paper is based on a series of country reports that were prepared by the Open Society Institute’s EU Monitoring and Advocacy Program and the Open Society Mental Health Initiative on access to education and employment for people with intellectual disabilities.

The country reports considered in this paper are Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Slovenia.
