LAHI Closes 2006 with Nearly $1 Million in Grants to Law-Based Approaches to Health

The Law and Health Initiative provided nearly $1 million in support to organizations advancing law-based approaches to health in 2006. Highlights include:

  • twelve grants to organizations in Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, and Kyrgyzstan to provide direct legal services to people who use drugs;
  • three grants to integrate legal services into microfinance, domestic violence, or palliative care programs in Kenya and South Africa;
  • four grants to issue monographs on key issues in HIV/AIDS and human rights in Southern Africa;
  • a grant to create the first HIV/AIDS-related legal aid center in Beijing, China;
  • support to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health, Paul Hunt, to expand the Special Rapporteur’s work on HIV/AIDS and accountability in the health system;
  • a commitment to provide unrestricted support to six HIV/AIDS and human rights organizations in Southern Africa, the region of the world most severely affected by HIV.
