Case Studies Help Improve Education on Cutting Edge Health and Human Rights Issues

Date:
August 8, 2010

The Open Society Public Health Program's Law and Health Initiative partnered with The Health Equity and Law Clinic (Faculty of Law, University of Ontario) and the Hastings Center to develop case studies on cutting edge health and human rights issues for faculty teaching courses on law, human rights, and patient care.

The three case studies cover access to sex reassignment surgery in relationship to legal identity change, access to maternal care for women who use drugs, and forced sterilization of women living with HIV.

Each case study is available in both English and Russian and includes a narrative and background section to stimulate student discussion, as well as a human rights and ethics analysis. The case studies can be adapted and used by students of medicine, public health, and law.
