OSI Launches Fellowships in Law, Human Rights, and Patient Care
In October, the Open Society Institute’s Public Health Program and Human Rights and Governance Grants Program worked with Soros foundations in Armenia, Georgia, Macedonia, and Ukraine to launch a new fellowship program on law, human rights, and patient care.
The fellowships, open to recent law graduates, aim to help develop a new generation of lawyers with expertise in human rights in patient care issues; increase the capacity of local NGOs interested in working in this area; and build the field through trainings and the development of materials and networks. The fellows will play a particularly critical role in the implementation of a practitioner’s guide for lawyers on taking cases involving human rights in patient care.
On October 8-9, the new fellows and their supervisors met for an orientation in Tblisi, Georgia, hosted by the Open Society Georgia Foundation. Participants discussed the goals of the fellowship, trainings for lawyers, the development of patient-friendly materials, and media strategies, while getting to know each other and making regional connections.
