Salzburg Seminar: Teaching Human Rights in Patient Care

Event Date: February 11, 2007 - February 17, 2007

The Open Society Institute Law and Health Initiative offered the first Salzburg Seminar on Law and Health on February 11-17, 2007. University professors, lawyers, and patients’ rights representatives from Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Ukraine participated in the seminar, entitled "Topics in Human Rights in Patient Care." Participants examined various aspects of health law, with the aim of developing curricula on Law and Health to implement in their home countries.

Course instructors included Jonathan Cohen and Tamar Ezer from the OSI Public Health Program’s Law and Health Initiative, Scott Newton of the University of London, and Judy Overall of the Medical Knowledge Institute. The Open Society Justice Initiative’s Mariana Berbec and Veronika Kristkova led participants through a practical workshop, "Interdisciplinary Curriculum Design," which will result in draft curricula proposals to be considered by OSI and national foundations for funding.

Course materials may be found online at www.aaf-online.org/07law_and_health.htm.
