Health and Human Rights: A Resource Guide

Health and Human Rights: A Resource Guide was created by OSI's Law and Health Initiative and Equitas as a user-friendly, multipurpose resource for health care providers, human rights professionals, and advocates.

The guide covers basic concepts and resources in health and human rights, with a focus on seven priority areas:

Chapter 1: Human rights in patient care

Chapter 2: HIV/AIDS and human rights

Chapter 3: Harm reduction and human rights

Chapter 4: Palliative care and human rights

Chapter 5: Sexual health and human rights

Chapter 6: Health and human rights in minority communities

Chapter 7: Mental health and human rights

Each chapter is organized into six sections that answer the following questions:

  • How is this a human rights issue?
  • Which are the most relevant international and regional human rights standards related to this issue?
  • What are some effective programs addressing this issue? What is OSI doing in this area?
  • Where can I find additional resources on this issue?
  • What are key terms for this topic?

Available online or as downloadable pdfs at http://equalpartners.info, Health and Human Rights is a starting point for a wide range of health and human rights programming. The guide offers ideas, information, and resources to develop programs in each of the issue areas.

The guide is regularly updated and was originally prepared for "Equal Partners: Health and Human Rights," a global seminar held in Cape Town, South Africa, June 3-8, 2007.
