New Report Highlights Developments and Challenges to Palliative Care in Southeastern Asia

This report aims to raise awareness of palliative care provision in Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines, and to generate recommendations on how to overcome barriers to development.

Prepared for the Open Society Institute by Lancaster University, Hospice and Palliative Care in Southeastern Asia: A Review of Developments and Challenges in Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines provides details of current services—including how they are funded and reimbursed—together with estimates of workforce capacity and an overview of educational programs. Individual success stories are acknowledged, together with oral histories of key individuals. Data on opioid availability are also presented, along with information on the country’s population, public health context, epidemiology, health care system and political economy. The study also addresses key ethical issues.
