OSI's Kathleen Foley Honored for Work on Cancer and Palliative Care
Kathleen Foley, medical director of the Open Society Institute International Palliative Care Initiative and attending neurologist in pain and palliative care at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, received the 17th annual Herbert and Maxine Block Memorial Lectureship Award for Achievement in Cancer.
At an award ceremony on October 9, Foley presented a keynote lecture, “Advancing Palliative Care for Cancer: A National and International Perspective.” Foley has devoted her career to pioneering treatment and support for patients with life-limiting and terminal illnesses. She founded the nation’s first pain service in a cancer center in 1981 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
The award, established by the Block family of Columbus, Ohio, honors the memory of Maxine and Herbert J. Block, who both died of cancer. It is given annually to a renowned cancer researcher, who is invited to the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital, to accept the award and deliver the annual Block Lecture.
