Lezha Town Health Center (LTHC) Dr. Ndue Doci $9,049.50 Grant period: September 1, 2007 – August 31, 2009 To provide a two-year grant to support the salary of a clinical palliative care physician/oncologist to develop an outpatient/day palliative care center at the Lezha Town Health Center, provided the institution will pay the remaining 50 percent salary support during the second year of the physician’s work.

Open Society Georgia Foundation Lasha Zallishvili $12,000 Grant date: February 6, 2007 To support Dr. Dimitri Kordazaia’s position as the coordinator to establish the National Palliative Care Program of Georgia, in consultation and collaboration with Dr. Frank Ferris, Dr. Jan Stjernsward, and Mary Callaway.
Cancer Prevention Center Dr. Rema Ghvamichava $4,000 Grant period: September 1, 2007 – August 31, 2009 To provide a two-year grant to support the salary of a clinical palliative care physician/oncologist to develop a palliative care services at the Cancer Prevention Center and National Cancer Center provided the institution will pay the remaining 50 percent salary support during the second year of the physician’s work.

Soros Foundation - Moldova Liliana Gherman $24,000 (matching) Grant date: March 8, 2007 To support the operational activities of the 2007 palliative care workplan. These activities include: development of palliative care services in the Oncological Institute; organization of a seminar with country stakeholders; advocacy on integrating palliative care services into the national health policies; publishing the palliative care needs assessment survey; and develop civil society capacity and participation.

Susan Block/Eric Krakauer $25,000 Grant period: January 1, 2007 – December 31, 2007 To provide support for Vietnam’s first palliative care train-the-trainers conferences, for continued work on improving national opioid policy, and for efforts to establish collaboration between Harvard Medical School Center for Palliative Care and Vietnamese colleagues to develop a model palliative care program.

American Association of Colleges and Nursing (AACN) Pam Malloy $5,000 Grant period: May 15, 2007 – July 15, 2007 To host a reception for attendees at the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Meeting in Vienna where the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) presented a paper based on IPCI’s palliative care for nurses course held in Salzburg in October 2006.
American International Health Alliance, Inc. (AIHA) Olena Dolotova $50,000 (funded through the Access to Essential Medicines Initiative) Grant period: November 15, 2007 – September 30, 2008 To provide administrative and logistical support to an OSI regional drug availability workshop in Ukraine in 2008 with participants from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, and Ukraine.
The African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer Lynette Denny $5,000 Grant period: June 1st – October 31st, 2007 To support the printing of a palliative care booklet for workshop delegates at the 6th International Cancer Conference, and other associated conference costs.
The African Palliative Care Association (APCA) Dr. Faith Mwangi-Powell $10,000 Grant period: August 1, 2007 – December 30, 2007 To support the participation of individuals working in palliative care at the 2nd APCA Regional Palliative Care Conference.
The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund Olivia Dix $42,000 Grant period: December 31st, 2007 – December 31st, 2008 To support new and emerging leaders in palliative care in sub-Saharan Africa to undertake relevant research to increase their knowledge and extend their professional capabilities. The aim of this project is to help boost palliative care research and palliative care as an academic specialty in sub-Saharan Africa and address the lack of a research base.
Help the Hospices Nick Pahl $250,000 – (IPCI $150,000/Global Fund Initiative $100,000) Grant period: November 30, 2007 to November 29, 2009 This two-part grant seeks to: 1) To support advocacy for palliative care at a local, national and global level through grants, technical assistance, networking, effective communication and a coordinated, systematic and proactive approach led by the Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance. 2) Develop a specific advocacy initiative to the Global Fund on palliative care and to target specific countries for proposal development and advocacy to access to Global Fund resources in the identified countries.
Hospice Casa Sperantei Daniela Mosoiu $35,000 Grant period: December 1, 2007 – December 31, 2008 The aim of the project is to support development of palliative care in the surrounding non-EU countries through theoretical and hands-on training at Hospice Casa Sperantei and by training and expertise offered by the HCS team in the participating countries of Moldova, Serbia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina and others.
Hospice Palliative Care Association – South Africa Liz Gwyther $25,000 ($12,500 Palliative Care; $12,500 Law and Health Initiative) To provide researchers with funding to author a background paper on palliative care as a human right.
Hungarian Hospice Foundation Kati Muszbek $25,000 Grant period: January 15, 2008 – January 15, 2009 To support the Hungarian Hospice Foundation’s four international training programs to be held in 2008 for hospice and palliative care, and to provide salary support to the project manager, staff, and numerous trainers.
Hungarian Hospice Palliative Association Dr. Katalin Hegedus $18,700 January 1, 2008 - December 31, 2008 To support the continued development of the monthly online CEE & FSU Palliative Care Newsletter in English and Russian languages that covers palliative care activities in the region, while aiming to increase country participation in international associations, movements and actions.
International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (IAPAC) Rick Calmelat $10,000 Grant period: January 15, 2007 – September 1, 2008 The purpose for this fellowship program is to promote the visibility of a clinician committed to the field of HIV/AIDS palliative care, and to enhance his/her effectiveness as an academic leader, role model, and mentor for future generations of health professionals. The fellowship project will address a critical aspect in the delivery of palliative care of HIV-infected patients within his/her respective communities.
International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (INCTR) Ian McGrath $5,000 Grant period: December 1, 2007 – December 31, 2007 To support the production and distribution of a special edition of the INCTR’s newsletter on the working groups of the Thematic Workshop held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in August 2007.
National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) Cynthia Goh $64,000 Grant period: January 1, 2007 – December 31, 2007 To support the development of a palliative care resource training center for healthcare professionals from resource poor countries in Southeast Asia.
National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) Cynthia Goh $10,000 Grant period: August 1, 2007 – July 31, 2008 To provide bursaries for two candidates to obtain the Asia Pacific Palliative Care Graduate Certificate.
National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) Cynthia Goh $15,000 Grant period: August 1, 2007 – October 1, 2007 To support the participation of individuals from resource poor countries attending the 2007 Asia Pacific Hospice Conference.
Pain and Policy Studies Group Karen Ryan $100,000 (funded through the Access to Essential Medicines Initiative) Grant period: January 1, 2008 – December 31, 2008 To support two major regional opioid availability workshops in 2008: one each in Southeast Asia and the Former Soviet Union. The PPSG will assist with participant selection, agenda and materials preparation, pre-workshop mapping, attend and participate in the workshops, and provide follow-up technical assistance during the grant period to stimulate improved patient access to opioid analgesics.
Philippine Pain Society Henry Lu $50,000 (funded through the Access to Essential Medicines Initiative) Grant period: November 1, 2007 – October 30, 2008 To provide administrative and logistical support to an OSI regional drug availability workshop in the Philippines in 2008 with participants from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand (leaders in the fields of pain, cancer, AIDS, and pharmacy, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Health.)
University of Cape Town Liz Gwyther $46,220 Grant period: January 1, 2007 – December 31, 2008 To provide grants for postgraduate students to complete their second year studies in palliative medicine at the University of Cape Town.
