Since 1985, MESAB has supported the training of over 5,000 healthcare professionals in South Africa. It now has an extensive network of physicians, dentists, nurses, and community healthcare workers and has developed innovative community healthcare initiatives. As part of its healthcare mission and especially because of the HIV/AIDS crisis in South Africa, MESAB needs to add palliative and hospice care and training to its program mix and these funds will enable MESAB to do so.

FHSSA will regrant these funds to HPCA. HPCA Mentorship Program-Phase 2 will be jointed funded by OSI's South African Palliative Care Initiative and the Elton John Foundation in the UK. Phase 1 of the Mentorship Program involved building the capacity of 28 South African Hospices (8 as mentors and 20 as development sites). Phase 2 will develop regional mentor teams for each of the five HPCA Regional Associations thereby enhancing regional capacity and infrastructure.
