Satellite Training/Educational Session on HIV/AIDS in Prison Settings
| Location: | Warsaw, Poland |
| Event Date: | May 13, 2007 |
Issues related to HIV/AIDS in prisons were one of the major focus areas of the 2007 International Conference on Reduction of Drug Related Harm. One plenary session, one major session, and one concurrent session were devoted to these issues. However, people working on, or with an interest in HIV/AIDS in prisons, identified the need for a more in-depth training on several of the key challenges related to HIV/AIDS in prison settings, including drug dependence treatment, provision of anti-retroviral treatment, establishment of needle and syringe programs, overdose prevention in prisons and upon release, and prevention of rape and other forms of sexual violence.
To address and discuss these issues, the AIDS Foundation East-West, the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network, the European Network on Drugs and Infections Prevention in Prison, the International Centre for Advancement of Addiction Treatment, and the OSI International Harm Reduction Development Program organized the "Satellite Training/Educational Session on HIV/AIDS in Prison Settings."
This one-day training, open to all IHRA Conference participants, provided in-depth information on these issues, a chance to discuss ways in which barriers to establishment of best practice can be overcome, and extensive networking opportunities. Extensive printed background materials will be available in English and Russian.
Simultaneous Russian interpretation was provided.
