OSI Holds Seminar on Civil Society and Access to Medicines in Zambia
The Access to Essential Medicines Initiative of OSI's Public Health Program convened civil society leaders and government officials from East and Southern Africa in Lusaka, Zambia on December 7-10, 2009 for a seminar on medicine shortages and anti-counterfeiting legislation in the region. The overall goal of the meeting was to strengthen civil society capacity in East and Southern Africa on access to medicines campaigning and advocacy.
The meeting drew upon the regional "Stop Stock-Outs" campaign and helped identify 2010 priorities for the campaign. The meeting also sought to educate participants on anti-counterfeiting legislation in the region. Such legislation can pose a threat to the development of generic medicines. Meeting organizers looked at examples from Kenya and Uganda and helped civil society advocates develop strategies to protect access to medicines in their own countries.
