Ian Johnson is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist based in Beijing. His fellowship project will study the intersection of religion and civil society at a time of broad revival among many faith-based groups.

A former senior correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, Johnson has also written for the New York Review of Books and the New York Times Magazine, among others. He is the author of two books, A Mosque in Munich: Nazis, the CIA and the Rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in the West (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2010), and Wild Grass: Three Portraits of Change in Modern China (Pantheon, 2004). Before being posted to China, he served as Germany bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal.  

In addition to the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting, given for his reportage on the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners, Johnson is the recipient of a Nieman Fellowship, a Society of Professional journalists Award, and two Overseas Press Club awards.
