The Open Society Fellowship program hosted a discussion on new media in authoritarian societies. John Kelly, founder of Morningside Analytics, talked about the emerging networked public sphere and presented his maps of online social networks in Iran, Egypt, Russia, and China.

Other panelists included Open Society Fellow Evgeny Morozov, who is writing a book on the Internet in authoritarian countries, Ethan Zuckerman, a Berkman Center fellow, whose work focuses on the impact of technology on the developing world, and Porochista Khakpour, an Iranian-American writer who talked about how the Iranian diaspora uses the Internet.

The panel was moderated by Darius Cuplinskas, director of the OSI Information Program.
