Newsletter Highlights OSI Education Conference and Roma Education Initiative

Date:
October 1, 2005

The September 2005 issue of Open Society Education News includes reports on OSI's 2005 Education Conference and Roma Education Initiative (now in its final year).

The newsletter also links to eight in-depth articles from seven postcommunist countries. Some of the subjects are deeply topical: sex education as an issue (or nonissue) in Poland’s elections; planned reforms of Czech primary schools; Slovakia’s school reforms after one year; the politicization of Belarusian students and youth; and the vexed issue of the status of the Russian language in Ukraine. Another set of articles considers neglected topics such as the teaching of ethnic minorities in Armenia and the plight of AIDS orphans in Ukraine. In addition, the newsletter provides a link to a cross-country survey of education in the postcommunist world prepared by Transitions Online for the 2005 conference.

For those who want to read more about education in the region, the newsletter provides details of the book Learning to Change: The Experience of Transforming Education in South East Europe (published by Central European University Press) and information about the bimonthly Network of Education Policy Centers Newsletter.

Funded by ESP and published by Transitions Online, Open Society Education News is available at archive.tol.cz/newsletter02.html.
