The Soros English Language Program (SELP), which focuses on country-specific needs for English language support, includes, but is not limited to:
- promotion of quality EFL (English as a foreign language) learning and teaching;
- professional capacity building via an array of teacher development and training projects including ESP (English for specific purposes);
- preparation for international English language exams required by U.S. and British universities;
- further development and diversification of professional portfolios of the Soros English/foreign language schools established in the foundation network;
- support to local, national, and regional English/foreign language teachers associations; and
- development of EFL textbook series that meet the requirements of government-sponsored educational reform underway in several countries of the foundation network.
SELP is funded from individual Soros foundation budgets, and its projects are prioritized in accordance with and in support of the Soros foundation's overall strategy. As a matter of general orientation, SELP seeks and encourages collaboration with local and international institutions and organizations that are interested in developing self-sustainable English/foreign language projects in the countries of the Soros foundations network. Those institutions and organizations should also be willing to collaborate with the SELP management on a matching funds basis.
