OSI-Supported Film Looks at Women and Drug Smuggling in Tajikistan

Date:
February 20, 2009

Live Containers, an Open Society Institute-supported documentary film shot in a women's prison, was shown at the 2009 UNESCO International Documentary Film Festival. It depicts the ways in which economic hardship and political chaos have led many Tajik women to become "live containers," smuggling heroin inside themselves. The government occasionally amnesties those women who were caught with a relatively small amount of drugs. Yet, despite their sincere repentance and their joy at being liberated, there in no guarantee that life will not make them go down this path again.
