Research in Asia and Mexico

Using the opportunity given by the upcoming UN General Assembly and its Special Session (UNGASS) on Illicit Drugs, Human Rights Watch plans to draw attention to the link between anti-narcotics policies and human rights abuses. HRW will draw upon recent research and advocacy on anti-narcotics policy and access to drug dependency and palliative care treatment in Thailand, India and China and a newly hired researcher based in Asia will conduct human rights investigations, publish research reports, and engage in regional outreach and advocacy on abuses that result from overreaching drug policies and practices. Human Rights Watch will also conduct new research on corruption and accountability connected to drug trafficking in Mexico and support OSI international advocacy on the harm caused by zealous drug policies.
