2008

Building an Integral Approach to Drug Policy in Mexico

The wide availability of drugs in Mexico and significant increase in drug consumption in recent years are among the evidence which point to the futility of the Mexican government's war on drugs. The need to build an integral approach, drawing on the perspectives of experts from a variety of backgrounds and engaging civil society and the authorities in this process, is self-evident.

CUPIHD's goals are threefold: the organization will consolidate its position as the main reference point on drug issues in Mexico, in practice, strengthening engagement with the authorities and civil society, and improving alliances with national and international organizations; it will carry out a strong communication strategy with the aim of placing harm reduction and human rights at the foundation of the debate on drug policy (for this, a website will be set up and maintained); and it will support and strengthen work to transform drug policy in Mexico while encouraging dialogue and seeking joint possibilities among actors.
