Director, Legal Aid Society

Nozima Kamalova is the director of the Legal Aid Society, Uzbekistan’s leading organization investigating high-profile human rights abuses. Kamalova has represented LAS at numerous international meetings, including UN treaty bodies such as the Committee against Torture and the Human Rights Committee, where she presented alternative reports on Uzbekistan’s compliance with the conventions.

Director, Central Asian Program

Vitaly Ponomaryov, one of the leading human rights experts on the five former Soviet Central Asian republics, is director of the Central Asian Program at the Memorial Human Rights Center. In addition to compiling the most comprehensive list of political and religious prisoners in Uzbekistan, Ponomaryov has written several books and articles on the region.

Ildar Shafiev, a well-known human rights lawyer and a member of the Legal Aid Society, has just completed a detailed alternative report on Uzbekistan’s compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which he will present to the UN Human Rights Committee on March 21.
