On March 21 and 22, the UN Human Rights Committee reviewed Uzbekistan’s compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. In addition to the Uzbek government's report on the issue, the Human Rights Committee also received an alternative report, prepared by nongovernmental experts on the human rights situation in this Central Asian state.
On March 22, OSI hosted a panel discussion of Uzbekistan with three human rights experts. They shared their views on what they see as the Uzbek government's lack of political will to genuinely deal with torture, its failure to fully implement the 2003 Uzbekistan-U.S. Strategic Partnership agreement, and the implications for U.S. policies in Uzbekistan and the region.
