Former Kyrgyzstan president Askar Akayev’s administration collapsed on March 24, 2005, as anti-government protesters stormed the presidential palace. Since then, persistent infighting and controversial political appointments have raised doubts about the provisional government’s ability to promote civil society.

At a forum hosted by the Central Eurasia Project, Edil Baisalov, president of the Coalition for Democracy and Civil Society, Kyrgyzstan, discussed the causes and consequences of the change in power.
