Challenges to Democracy in Pakistan

Location: OSI-New York
Event Date: October 25, 2005

OSI's Central Eurasia Project hosted a discussion of democracy in Pakistan with Asma Jahangir, Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, UN Commission on Human Rights, and Founder, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.

Jahangir is a human rights activist and lawyer who has spent much of her career defending the rights of women, children, and religious minorities in Pakistan and abroad. In 1992, she became Advocate of the Pakistan Supreme Court. In 1998, the UN Commission on Human Rights appointed her as Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Arbitrary, and Summary Executions.

The Open Forum speaker series aims to enhance policy debate on key issues facing Central Asia, the South Caucasus, and the Middle East, and to raise public awareness of important developments in these regions. Monthly Open Forum events are held in New York and Washington, DC, and are attended by leading policymakers, scholars, NGO staff, and journalists. All events are free of charge.
