Shiite Islamic Politics and the Future of Iraq
| Event Date: | July 7, 2004 |
| Speaker: | Juan R.I. Cole |
Juan Cole, a professor at the University of Michigan and an expert on modern Islamic movements, discussed the inability of the now-defunct Coalitional Provisional Authority (CPA) to deal effectively with post-war violence in Iraq, as well as the continuing impact the CPA's policies will have in coming months. In his talk, Cole tied the CPA's shortcomings to a lack of understanding by American policymakers of Iraq's internal politics.
