Galima Bukharbaeva

Project Director, IWPR

For the past eight years, Galima Bukharbaeva has worked as a journalist in Uzbekistan for the local offices of Internews, Agence France Presse, and the Institute for War & Peace Reporting (IWPR). As IWPR's project director in Uzbekistan since April 2000, Bukharbaeva has worked to improve the skills and broaden the experience of local journalists. She has raised local and international awareness of human rights issues in Uzbekistan. Bukharbaeva has endured threats and harassment by Uzbek authorities due to her reporting on politically sensitive issues, including police torture, repression of Islamic activists and state-sponsored abuses against the press.
