In a 2006 speech, George Soros proposed that Europe should be a model for a global open society. But this vision will only be credible if the European Union maintains an open society in itself. This is not self-evident when looking at the situation of minorities in Eastern Europe and the increased discrimination and exclusion of Muslims in Western Europe.
OSI plays a key role in supporting efforts to raise the standards of minorities’ rights in EU countries, through both monitoring and providing policy and practical advice to the EU and national institutions.
