War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity in Burma

The International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute and the Open Society Foundations host a lunch briefing to discuss the establishment of a UN Commission of Inquiry into war crimes and crimes against humanity in Burma.

Expert speakers from Burma Campaign UK, Burma Lawyers’ Council, International Federation of Human Rights, and Human Rights Watch [to be confirmed] will discuss:

  • prima facie evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Burma: the escalation of human rights violations in Kachin, Karen and Shan States since the 2010 elections;
  • the legal system in Burma and the lack of legal remedies for victims at the national level;
  • the need for an impartial and independent investigation into international crimes in Burma;
  • putting an end to human rights violations: deterrence for further crimes and precedents of the Commission of Inquiry.

The meeting will run prior to the afternoon EU Human Rights Working Group (COHOM) session, where the human rights situation in Burma and a provision for the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry will be reviewed under the forthcoming UNGA Resolution on Burma.
