The Open Society Institute strongly condemns the continued house arrest of Burmese democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Commuting her sentence of three years hard labor to one and a half years of house arrest will still effectively shut Daw Suu out of next year’s elections. The trial proceedings made a mockery of justice and deserve worldwide opprobrium. We call on Burmese junta to release the Nobel laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, as well as the 2,000 other political prisoners in Burma’s jails.
