Press Release
June 17, 2005

On July 19, Burma’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi will turn 60. But Suu Kyi is under house arrest; she remains a prisoner of Burma’s military regime and in fact her birthday on Sunday marks her 2,523rd day under military detention.

Burma’s ruling junta, the ironically-named State Peace and Development Council or SPDC, jailed Suu Kyi since 1989 under various forms of house arrest. Two years ago, Suu Kyi was ordered under restrictive house arrest following an attack on her traveling party on May 30, 2003 in Depayin in northern Burma.
