The Darkness We See: Torture in Burma's Interrogation Centers and Prisons
The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, a long-term OSI grantee based in Asia, has published a ground-breaking report detailing the pervasive use of torture on political prisoners in Burma. "The Darkness We See: Torture in Burma's Interrogation Centers and Prisons," exposes the conditions in detail with research based upon interviews with 35 former prisoners.
"The Darkness We See" was created with the intention of both exposing the current conditions and precipitating political change. In the forward, Brita Sydhoff, secretary general of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims, states “Documentation such as in this report is the very basis to inform our thinking about how best to promote change.”
In reaction to the report, U.S. Senator John McCain said that it "illustrates in painstaking detail yet one more reason why United Nations Security Council action is long overdue. Those who care about human rights and human decency should press the Security Council to take up the issue of Burma immediately."
