OSI Announces Baltimore Venture Fund

Date:
July 17, 2002

Open Society Institute–Baltimore and a group of Baltimore-area foundations and financial institutions have raised $15 million to create more than 1,000 new jobs for low-income Baltimore residents and financial returns for investors to do more good.

The Baltimore Fund, which was initiated by OSI–Baltimore and co-sponsored by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, will invest in eight to 10 growth-oriented companies in and around Baltimore over the next four years. It will eventually become part of a $50 million multi-state fund managed by The Reinvestment Fund. Other participants in the Baltimore Fund include: the Baltimore Community Foundation, the Jacob and Hilda Blaustein Foundation, the France-Merrick Foundation, the Morris Goldseker Foundation, Deutsche Bank, the Johns Hopkins Institutions, the Zanvyl and Isabelle Krieger Fund, the Aaron Straus & Lillie Straus Foundation, the Alvin and Fanny B. Thalheimer Foundation, and the Hoffberger Foundations.
