OSI-Baltimore Drug Addiction Treatment Program Director Discusses "Cities on Track" Conference on MetroWatch

Date:
June 1, 2006

Dr. Robert Schwartz, OSI-Baltimore director, spoke on WPFW's MetroWatch program to share the plans for the conference "Cities on Track: Building Drug Addiction Treatment Systems." Schwartz noted that addiction is a common disorder which cuts across all races, geographic locations, and socioeconomic groups. Treatment is highly effective but in short supply in the US, he said, where the majority of individuals in need of alcohol and drug treatment do not get it. If treatment were made more widely available, the number of HIV and hepatitis infections, overdose deaths, crime, family and workplace problems and incarcerations would drop.
